Consider me the EXPERT at this subject. I recently potty trained our twins, so I know what’s up. I keep the mattress protectors on all of our mattresses except for my daughter’s. She potty trained almost over night and I didn’t even think to put one on it.  Basically I forgot, until she had her first accident. I eventually found the easiest way to remove pee stains and smell from mattress.

When I made this recipe, I doubled it only because I noticed multiple stains and wanted to use it on some additional chairs. It does NOT keep. I sat mine down on a table and it spewed out all over the table and floor. Made a huge mess. I say all this to make the point to only make enough for the one application.

This recipe only uses 3 ingredients:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Baking Soda
  • Liquid Dish Soap
  • Spray Bottle (obviously)

Instructions: Remove Pee Stains and Smell from Mattress

First off, measure out 8 oz of hydrogen peroxide which is half a bottle. This stuff is super cheap! Only $1 at target (stock up).

Next, add 3 tablespoons of baking soda. I made a make shift funnel from a paper plate. It is very helpful to have a real one. I couldn’t find mine. Shocker.

The last step is adding a few drops of liquid dish soap. My mom has instilled the power of Dawn, so I typically always use it when making cleaning solutions. Other brands I adore are here, and here. Gently swirl this solution to activate the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Now that your solution is complete, let’s move on to the application! There are only 3 steps to remove pee stains and SMELL from mattress:

  1. First, apply the solution to the mattress making sure to saturate.
  2. Next, relax and allow the solution to dry completely using a fan or open window to expedite the process.
  3. Finally, vacuum up the remaining baking soda residue once the mattress has dried.

I was shocked at how there was no more odor! I thought for sure if I stuck my nose down there I would smell it! To finish off, I usually spray the mattress and her linens with my easy fabric refresher.

This is good to know. None of the mattresses in our house have any stains like that, but I am sure this is going to help TONS of people.

It is amazing how fast we remember those protectors after it’s too late!! This sounds like a great way to get smells out, my kids seemed to always have accidents when sick and the sheets were in the wash.

We’ve never had any stains like that since we’ve had mattress covers that zip right over the mattress for years. This sounds like it would be helpful for folks that don’t use covers.

What a great way to refresh a damaged mattress. With five pets and two small children, I use double layers of mattress covers to prevent stains and odors from happening!

As a mom to two boys, one who didn’t potty train until after age 4, I could have used this trick back then. It was a crazy time of urine on mattresses, having to get new ones all of the time as you could never get them clean or smell out. I am certain this will be helpful for parents who had to deal with the same thing!

This is a great tip! I’m sure it would work for other mattress stains as well. The “recipe” is certainly simple enough with common everyday ingredients.
