Dust Free Sanding Before Painting
Dust Free Sanding Before Painting will allow you to prep your walls or surfaces quickly with little to no mess.
Using this Dust Free Sanding Before Painting technique has saved us time and energy. Sanding your walls, cabinets or other surfaces before painting is a very important step. This will help the new paint to go on smoothly and will prevent the paint from pealing or looking cracked after a year or so.
However, Sanding, all be it very important, can be a messy step. Dust flies everywhere, floors, counters, on your face, etc. This would be a great time to remind you to always wear protective eye wear and a dust mask while sanding. All that time you would have spent cleaning up after sanding can now be used to enjoy a refreshing iced tea when you use this Dust Free Sanding Before Painting technique.
If you plan on sanding a larger area, I recommend investing in an electric sander. This will cut your work load in half.
Here’s how to make your next sanding project less messy while cutting stress levels in half!
What you’ll need:
- Electric Sander
- Sandpaper
- Shop Vac
- Black electrical tape
- Blue painters tape
- Sump Pump Hose
- PVC Pipe Adapter (If Needed)
- TSP Heaving Duty Cleaner before Painting
- Protective eye wear
- Dust mask
Dust Free Sanding Before Painting Instructions:
- Make sure to buy a good electric sander. Not all are created equally. This DEWALT Grip Sander kit is a fantastic choice. Make sure the sander you buy has a round port on the back for the shop vac to attach.
- If you would prefer to use a hand held, non-electric sander, perhaps you’d like to try this option. Dust Free Drywall Handheld Vacuum Sander
- Always use the appropriate sand paper for the job. We used sandpaper grid 220 when painting our kitchen cabinets.
- If the Sump pump hose does not attach snug to your sander, buy a PVC pipe adapter (as shown in the photo) To insure a snug fit, wrap black electrical tape around the shop vac hose, then attach to sump pump to seal the connectors. Final step, wrap Blue painters tape around where the hoses meet. Both tapes are easy to remove without leftover sticky residue)
- Turn on shop vac and electric sander, and begin sanding.
- Once surfaces are sanded, make sure to use TSP Heaving Duty Cleaner before painting. (Make sure to follow the directions on the box).
I hope this helps you with your next painting adventure.

Thanks for the tutorial! I’ve spent many a day covered in dust from sanding. I haven’t checked my sander, but I pray it has a suction piece.

I really need to get a new sander with a spot for a shop vac. We’ve had ours for almost 20 years and it’s still going strong though!
Your kitchen looks great, btw!

You offer some great tips for dust-free sanding prior to painting. I have to admit that I am terrible about sanding before painting. I usually don’t even though I should.

Fine sanding dust gets everywhere! The Dewalt sander with the shop vac port is a super idea. It is so hard to clean up all the dust and keep out of your wet paint. Thanks for the tips.

Where was this years ago when we sanded down all our cabinets and had sanding dust all over the place. I wish I would known this then. It would have saved us a lot of time and cleaning energy afterwards

Great idea. For dust free sanding, I had used DeWalt sander. It’s an amazing tool with low price.
