Our dining room table set is also our every meal table. Which means it takes a beating with 3 toddlers every single day. I would recover the chairs and bench about every 1 1/2 years until I figured out a way to make a washable bench cover for dining table.

To make this washable bench cover for dining table, you will need:

  • Fabric
  • Coordinating Thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Tape Measure

There are Six easy steps to accomplish this washable bench cover for dining table.

  1. Measure
  2. Cut Fabric
  3. Cut Out Corners
  4. Sew the Corners
  5. Final Fitting
  6. Final Product

Directions for Washable Bench Cover for Dining Table

Step One — Measure — To figure out the amount of fabric you will need, I recommend measuring your width from bottom of bench seat across to the other side and add 2 inches. You will do the same to get the width. My width is 22 inches and my length is 52 inches.

(22+2)” x (54+2)” = 24″ x 56″

Step Two — Cut Fabric — After you do the math for your project, cut the fabric to the length and width and lay flat on the table.

Step Three — Cut Out Corners — In order to create the corners, you need to sew them together. The easiest way to do this is by cutting the corners out and sewing those seams together. Measure the top of the seat width and length. Subtract that number from the original length and width to get the measurement for your cut out. Then divide that number by 2 because you are measuring for each end.

Top of Bench — 15″ x 47″

(24 – 15)” x (56 – 47)” = 9″ x 9″ /2 = 4.5″

4.5″ x 4.5″ Square

Step Four — Sew the corners — Line the two side up right side in. You will be sewing the “ugly” side of the fabric. See picture below. Next, pin the sides to keep together. Next, sew a straight stitch 1.4″ from the edge. In addition, you will need to serge or do a zig zag stitch since repetitive washing can unravel fabrics.

Step Five —
Final Fitting — After sewing each corner, slip the cover over the bench. Check to make sure everything lines up and turn up the raw edge. This will give you your line to sew the final edge. Remove the cover and sew the final seam all around.

What a great idea! This is definitely so practical in saving recovering benches. It also looks quite straight-forward the way you have explained each step with photos.

I’m far from crafty. I am not good at making anything, but I surely wish I was, because I have some chairs in my home that I would love to do this too! I love that fabric print also!
