Quick Easy Hem for Curtains Without Sewing

Share

This is a quick easy hem for curtains without sewing or even taking them down. This project takes no time at all and has no clean up!

I found myself needing a quick easy hem for curtains without sewing that I could use to fix my family room curtains. Because the sun is so intense in the morning, a darker black out curtain is necessary for our back slider. I found the best set of panels at IKEA. I love the dark navy velvety material. It is luxurious, but still practical in my living room where it could be splattered by chocolate milk or applesauce on any given day.

I installed this rod last year with my last set of curtains so I wasn’t interested in moving it. Not to mention, I would still need to hem the curtains. The easiest way to fix the pooling fabric was a hem. There are many instances where a pooling hem is absolutely beautiful, but unfortunately not practical for such a high traffic area in our home.

Things you will need for this quick easy hem for curtains without sewing:

  1. Witch stitch
  2. Tape Measure
  3. Iron and board
  4. Wet wash cloth
  5. Clothes Pins

Start off by marking the length you want for your curtains. I want mine to just graze the floor. You can also make it up to an inch off the floor, but anything over will be a little too short. If you haven’t hung your curtains yet, do so! I feel like this is the best way to get the perfect length.

Once you have pinned your curtains, lay them out straight on your ironing board. Next, iron a crease checking the length is equal from one end to another. If you have a bunch of excess fabric, cut it off. I cut off half of mine.

DISCLAIMER. Before you hit the curtains with the iron, make sure the fabric can withstand the high heat. You can always check out an inconspicuous area.

If you have never heard of Stitch Witchery, or witch stitch, it is the best product ever. Instead of using a needle and thread, you simply put the piece of this magical tape. After you iron your crease, place a strip of tape  between your two layers of fabric. Next, cover the top layer with a wet cloth, and apply the iron on the hottest setting. Hold down for 10 seconds. Finally, check to see if the fabric has bonded. If not, apply more heat.

Once you have done this all the way across the hem of the curtain, let them go and check out your handy work. Most of all, wasn’t that quick and easy?

This is awesome! I never learned how to sew. My grandmother tried to teach me, but I never had the patience to learn. I’m always looking for ways to step up my design techniques without spending a fortune.

My mother-in-law is a wonderful seamstress. Me? I have a sewing machine still in the packaging in the garage. I need all the sewing-free hacks you can throw at me.

I never thought hemming curtains could be so easy! I’m definitely not a seamstress so this idea is perfect for me.
