Keeping the cost down and finishing projects in a timely manner, has been very important to us. Cutting out the old tile and putting in new, comes with a few snags. It can crack the surrounding tiles, resulting in more work, more time and money.
Here’s how to paint over dated backsplash tile without breaking the bank.
Tools you’ll need for this project:
- Sandpaper
- Sandpaper holder
- 409 All Purpose Cleaner
- Painters Tape
- Household Cleaning Gloves
- TSP All Purpose Heavy Duty Cleaner
- Small Soft bristle paintbrush
- Insl-x tile bonding primer
- Behr Stain Blocking Paint, Oil Based paint from Home Depot
Step by Step Instructions:
- Clean the area of all possible oil spatters or food.
- Vigorously sand the tile you’d like to paint as hard as you can.
- Wear Gloves and clean the sanded surface with Savongran TSP All Purpose Heavy Duty Cleaner twice*. Clean with a wet rag. Then wipe down area using rubbing alcohol on a rag to prevent leaving any water behind.
- Tape off tile with painters tape to prevent paint going on the grout. Drape with a towel or Painters Plastic, under the backslash in case paint drips.

That finished product looks great! Our previous owners painted over the tile in our kitchen, too. They were plain cream before and they sponge painted orange over it. It looked natural from afar! Great job!
