How to quickly clean your microwave (in two different ways!) with no harsh cleaners using safe products for your whole family and in less than 10 minutes!
If you are anything like me, you use your microwave DAILY! If something explodes in there, you wipe it up. But I’m guilty of letting all the day to day things get passed me without wiping them down when I’m in a rush… then all of a sudden, BAM, my microwave is outta control!
So, when looking for the quickest and most effective way to get my microwave clean, I discovered that, (kinda like a facial) STEAM seems to do the trick! Steam takes a lot of the hard scrubbing out of the equation. It is sort of doing all the hard work for you! I have included two slightly different ways to accomplish the same task…getting that microwave CLEAN with steam!
The first option uses the ingredient, white distilled vinegar. Vinegar is a fabulous tool to have at your disposal when cleaning your home. It’s versatile, environmentally safe and CHEAP! Your mom used it…your grandma used it…time to step up to the plate missy. Plus I buy a giant jug of cleaning vinegar for the house so I always have it around for easy cleaning!
The second option is vinegar-less! This one uses water and lemon oil, to get the same job done without the vinegar smell. Both options are winners, so it’s up to you to choose which you prefer (or which one you find easier)!
Place one cup of water AND one cup vinegar into your glass measuring cup. Put your wooden spoon into the mixture…this is a precautionary step to avoid the possibility of the mixture overheating and accidently exploding.
Heat. Program your microwave for anywhere between 8-10 minutes. You know your microwave, so use your judgment. Go ahead and hit START. When the time is completed, carefully remove the glass measuring cup with an oven mitt. It WILL be HOT so use caution.
Go to work! The interior of your microwave should now be wiped down with that sponge of yours…everything should EASILY come clean, as the seaming action will have loosened all the yuk from your microwave. Easy peasy.
Essential Oil Method
For this method, you want to use your sponge as the “stand-in” for the water/vinegar portion of Option #1. So first, fully saturate your sponge. Place it centered, inside your microwave. Take the spray bottle and place 2oz. to 3oz. of water inside, along with 4 or 5 drops of your lemon essential oil. The oil quantity will be all personal preference…use as little or as much as you like!
Spritz the inside of your microwave, and don’t be stingy! Get everywhere in there! Two minutes is typically the right amount of time to heat that mixture up. After the two minutes is up, don’t get impatient! Let the microwave sit with the heated mixture in there for a few minutes, while it continues to do its work! Once the sponge has cooled down, you can get in there and wipe up what’s left. Any yuk that was in there should easily wipe up with little to NO EFFORT.
And Now, for the Outside!
Using a clean cotton kitchen towel or microfiber cloth use the same vinegar mixture to wipe down the outside of your microwave as well. If you have a stainless steel exterior you may want to use stainless steel wipes instead.
I find using the vinegar method 1 time a month is the perfect interval for this deeper cleaning. Just don’t let the marinara sauce stains set next time. 😉
