These homemade shower disks for congestion are the perfect cold buster. Their dinosaur shape make colds more bearable for the little ones.
After a very long break, we are back! Our family happened to move over the last couple months to Canada. NBD. But really, it has been a wonderful experience tainted by that pesky common cold. Congestion. Dry nasal passages. Hacking. All the good stuff, right? So naturally I decided homemade shower disks for congestion were the perfect first post!
Do you remember the Vick’s shower disks that were out there once upon a time? Pop them on the shower floor and breath in the fragrance. Well, this is pretty much it, except they are a fraction of the cost and made from safe ingredients. Perfect for kids. When littles are congested, there isn’t much to do for them other than steam showers. This adds an extra punch & helps entertain a bit.
I used the same silicone mold as Catalina in her post here for the adorable dinosaur crayons. It is the perfect size & way cooler for the littles. My little dinosaur disk didn’t completely melt in my steam shower, so I tossed it in the bathtub. Safe enough for both!
Homemade shower disks for congestion
- 1 C. Baking Soda
- 1/2 C. Epsom Salts
- 2 Tbsp. Water
- Essential Oils –
- Silicone Mold
- Mix the baking soda and epsom salts in a bowl. Slowly add the water so the mixture begins to stick together.
- Add the essential oils to the baking soda/epsom salt mixture. I used 8 drops of Lavender, Lemon & Rosemary oils. I finished with 16 drops each of Peppermint & Eucalyptus Radiata oils.
- Once blended together, press the mixture into the silicone molds, carefully packing each one tightly.
- Allow to dry overnight and store in an airtight container. Our home is so dry, ours dried out in a couple hours!
I went to this incredible Apothecary in my new city of Calgary. They educated me on the different oils that I was using and helped me understand more of their use. I will say, I am so glad I went into there because she gave me pure ingredients as well as a complete understanding on the right oils for my specific need. Eucalyptus Radiata is better for little kids and the inhalation use. I never knew that setting out to recreate this project.
I’m now obsessed with essential oils. Can’t wait to share more goodies with you! Stay tuned.
