Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent is a convenient way to clean your clothes that is both inexpensive and chemical-free.
This recipe for homemade liquid laundry detergent takes only a few minutes to throw together and at a fraction of the cost of store-bought detergent! The homemade version also keeps out the harsh chemicals many store-brand laundry detergents include.
For my liquid batch of laundry detergent, I grabbed a 1-gallon jug from my pantry. Any container will do, nothing fancy is necessary, but 1 gallon is the best size for this recipe.
HOW TO MAKE LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT
- Place your Dawn dish soap into the container. Then add the Borax and washing soda.
- Add the 4 cups HOT water to dissolve the other ingredients.
- Seal the container and shake WELL.
- Once the ingredients are fully mixed, you can open the container and fill it the rest of the way with cold/tap temp water. Then, seal the container again, and shake WELL.
How to make washing soda
I know washing soda isn’t an ingredient many people have handy, but you can easily make some with just baking soda, a baking dish, and an oven. First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Then, pour baking soda about 1/2 inch thick into the baking dish. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. The baking soda should turn grainy instead of powdery and clumpy. After cooling, store in an air-tight container.
How To Use Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent
When you are washing a small to medium size load, a ¼ cup amount of this detergent is the correct measurement. If you are doing a large load, 1/3 cup is appropriate.
We wash A LOT of laundry and we are always happy with the results we get from this liquid laundry detergent. If you’re washing a load of whites, you may want to use our Laundry Whitening Solution or add some extra Oxi-Clean to get that extra-bright look.
Store your detergent until the next use. I recommend giving it a good shake before using again, as the ingredients may settle while being stored. This detergent works in both front load and top load machines.
